Metals – Venezuela – Sidor to import rebar despite increased production
Venezuelan state steelmaker Sidor will have to import 30,000t of rebar for the local construction market despite reporting a 154% year-on-year increase in steel production during H1, workers’ representative Pedro Rondn told BNamericas.
“Even though the figures are increasing Sidor will have to import rebar to carry out the government’s housing plan,” Rondn said.
Also, even though the company posted an increase in steel production, it is an increase over last year’s low output.
“You shouldn’t compare anything to last year. The year that we should use as the basis of comparison is 2007, when there was record production,” he said.
Sidor produced 1.4Mt of liquid steel in the first half of this year. In 1H07 it produced 2.4Mt, and closed that year with 4.3Mt.
At end-2010, Sidor’s labor director Jhony Luna told BNamericas that the company would have to import rebar to meet local demand and that the possibility of buying the raw material in Brazil or Canada was being evaluated.
The Sidor plant, the biggest in Venezuela, has liquid steel capacity of 4.2Mt/y. The company is forecasting output of 3.8Mt this year, which would be an increase of 111% over the 1.8Mt produced in 2010.
