Petrochemicals – Brazil – BDP’s growth driven by chemical, petrochemical sectors

The Brazilian subsidiary of US logistics and transportation company BDP forecasts revenue growth of 25% this year driven by the chemical and petrochemical industries, the company’s general manager in Brazil, Roberto Croce, told BNamericas, without providing hard figures.

BDP began to focus on Brazil’s chemical and petrochemical sectors in early 2008 and the industries currently account for 65-70% of the company’s operations in the country, the executive said.

The outlook for the coming years is favorable, with demand from the sectors increasing consistently through 2014 due to the FIFA World Cup to be hosted in Brazil, said Croce. However, problems with bottlenecks in logistics and infrastructure need to be solved, he added.

With demand up in 2010 as a result of a strong recovery from the global economic meltdown in 2008-09, BDP is already facing problems, for example, with cargo stuck at Sao Paulo’s international airport.

Croce explained that shipments used to be released on the day they arrived, but with the sudden increase in operations dispatch is now taking up to five days.

“This year has been different from 2009, when companies managed lower stocks. Currently, companies are building inventories back up and returning to full capacity, which has put a lot of pressure on the supply chain. Delays in the processes end up negatively impacting production itself as well as commercial relations with clients,” Croce said.

With the chemical and petrochemical industries booming in Brazil, BDP is investing to meet the needs of the industries. “We plan to grow even more within these sectors,” he added.

The company plans to open a new office in Rio de Janeiro this year, which will be focused on the chemical and petrochemical sectors as well as oil and gas.

Headquartered in Sao Paulo, BDP also has offices in Brazil in Santos and Campinas (Sao Paulo state), Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais), Recife (Pernambuco) and Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul). The company has offices in Argentina and Chile, and works with partners in several other Latin American countries.

BDP has over 4,000 clients worldwide, including German Bayer and US-based firms Dow Chemical and DuPont.
